The ACT Government has partnered with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and leaders the opportunity to build their governance and leadership skills.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members, especially those who are involved in community-controlled organisations, are invited to apply for the Governance and Development Course which aims to provide participants with a better understanding of governance and the responsibilities of being a director, or board member, of a community organisation.
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Rachel Stephen-Smith said the ACT Government is investing $15,000 to provide 25 places on the course.
“We want to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members have the opportunity to develop and enhance their skills to increase their participation on boards and as Directors of organisations.
“This another important example of the ACT Government supporting self-determination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and community-controlled organisations. This commitment in self-determination is fundamental to the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement 2019-2028,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.
The course, to be held in February 2020, will focus on the role of the Director and the Board. This stand-alone unit is part of AICD’s Foundations of Directorship for Indigenous Organisations course.
The course includes:
- How Boards do their job – corporate governance
- Different organisation types and their governance structures
- Directors’ duties and responsibilities
- Rights of Directors
On successful completion of the course graduates will become AICD members.
