Investing in communities and events across Tasmania

Nic Street,Minister for Community Services and Development

Through the 2022-23 Budget, the Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering on our commitments for all Tasmanians and importantly, delivering for our regions and communities.

That’s why through the 2022-23 Tasmanian Budget we are investing:

*$74,000 to Phoenix House on King Island;

*$440,000 to extend Volunteering Tasmania’s Safeguarding Volunteering project over two years;

*$300,000 to support place-based food solutions identified in the Food Relief to Food Resilience Action Plan for one year; and

*$1.25 million across four years to enable Council of the Ageing Tasmania to continue conducting Seniors Week annually.

In addition, we recognise the importance of increasing participation at the grassroots and community level by continuing to invest in Sport and Recreation initiatives.

As part of the 2022-23 Budget we will provide:

*$75,000 per year over two years to Reclink Tasmania to allow them to continue providing support for at risk and disadvantaged Tasmanians to enjoy sporting activities;

*$185,000 per year over four years from 2022 to 2026 is being provided for a strategy to achieve outcomes aligned to the National Policy Framework for Girls and Women in Sport;

*$200,000 in 2022-23 for Netball Tasmania to support the game at the grassroots and elite levels; and

*$300,000 for the Sport and Recreation Grants program which supports the continued capacity growth of the sector and ongoing provision of safe, fair and inclusive sport and recreation in the State.

Sport allows people to be part of something bigger than themselves, and the same can be said for the hospitality and events industry and the vital role it plays in supporting our visitor economy, especially in our regions.

We have been working closely with the Tasmanian Hospitality association to support their work in many areas, including funding to support leadership for women in the industry and the mental wellbeing of all hospitality workers.

We recognise that the performance of the local government sector is vital to the future of the Tasmanian economy and the wellbeing of our communities, and we are investing $1.64 million in the Budget to continue the important work of the Review of Local Government.

The 2022-23 Budget outlines the Government’s clear plan to strengthen Tasmania’s future, unlike the Labor party, who have no plan, no alternative budget and can only deliver cheap shots.

Yesterday, Ms White’s toxic, petty politicking was on display for all to see with her ill-timed criticisms of our southern stadium vision.

Just as Tasmania’s bid for its own AFL and AFLW team is about more than just the game, our vision is about so much more than just an oval.

It is only by being aspirational we can achieve better outcomes for Tasmania, that’s exactly what we intend to do.
