It’s time to buckle up, South Australia

During a State-wide traffic operation this week police focused on drivers and passengers choosing not to wear a seatbelt.

So far this year, 11 people who lost their lives on SA roads this year were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. This represents 23% of all lives lost so far in 2021.

Despite these alarming statistics, 42 drivers or passengers were detected not wearing their life-saving device.

Operation Belt Up ran from Tuesday 16 November until Thursday 18 November 2021.

Superintendent Robert Gray said “While the vast majority of people do the right thing and buckle up, there are still too many people not wearing a seatbelt when they’re driving and that’s just very disappointing.”

“There is no excuse and the numbers don’t lie. If you’re not wearing a seatbelt and you have a crash, you’re eight times more likely to die. Why take the risk?” said Superintendent Gray.

During the previous Operation Belt Up in October 2021, 46 drivers were detected not wearing a seatbelt.
