The International Whaling Commission (IWC) is seeking research proposals to help understand how offshore renewable energy might affect migratory whales. This will inform best practice.
The research will explore:
- underwater noise
- construction impacts
- how offshore renewable projects may influence whale behaviour and movements
- how to best mitigate potential impacts.
This work is part of our five‑year partnership with IWC under the Renewables Environmental Research Initiative (RERI).
RERI is supporting:
- a more efficient transition to onshore and offshore renewable energy
- the protection of Australia’s biodiversity while meeting net zero targets.
Australia is committed to working with the IWC to address potential impacts to cetaceans globally. We are also proud to be hosting and chairing the 70th meeting of the IWC in Hobart later this year.
Apply before 27 March 2026.
