Joint exercise lands jets on rural highway

In an Australian first, an aeromedical jet landed on a highway last month as part of a joint training exercise between the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and South Australia Police.

On Thursday 27 April, South Australia’s emergency services came together to close the Stuart Highway near Glendambo to facilitate the safe landing of SAPOL and RFDS aircraft on the Traeger Emergency Roadstrip.

The mock crash scenario helped South Australia’s emergency services to practice their roles and work together as a team to deliver the best response to a medical emergency in a remote part of the state.

Senior Sergeant Gus McFarlane thanked the public for their patience and understanding during the brief road closures.

“I appreciate the public had a short wait while we closed the highway to ensure that both aircraft landed safely and their patience is greatly appreciated. I hope they enjoyed the show!”
