Kelcey Tier reserve reopened

The Devonport City Council has reopened the Kelcey Tier reserve, but users have been warned to ensure they keep a safe distance from each other.

Mayor Annette Rockliff said Council believed that if users behaved appropriately and maintained social distancing it was safe to make the trails available to the public.

“Council is aware that many residents love to use the trails for recreation, and I am pleased that we have been able to reopen them,” she said.

“But it is the responsibility of all users to behave appropriately. If Council becomes aware that riders are not obeying the current restrictions relating to safe distancing it will have no choice but to close the tracks again.”

Mayor Rockliff said she hoped users exercised some common sense and did not all seek to ride them at the first opportunity.

“What Council does not want to see is hundreds of people descend on the area at the first opportunity – that would not be safe,” she said.

“I trust that some will wait another day or two before going there.”

Mayor Rockliff said the opening of the tracks would also ease congestion on the city’s other bike and walking paths, which have become much busier because of the COVID-19 restrictions.

She said the reopening of the trails should not be taken as an indication that other recreation facilities – such as the Splash Aquatic Centre or Devonport Recreation Centre – would reopen soon.

Council playgrounds also remain closed.

“We will continue to abide by advice from the health experts with regard to any other openings,” she said.
