Boroondara Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating following the theft from a car and subsequent deceptions in Kew last month.
Investigators have been told a car was broken into and a wallet stolen on Willsmere Road between 7am and 3.30pm on Wednesday 8 July.
A card from the stolen car was used at a supermarket on Princess Street at about 3.15pm that same day.
Police have released CCTV and images of a man they believe can assist with their investigation.
