More than 120,000 ute loads of green waste have been collected from kerbsides across Townsville as work has finished on the clean-up effort from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily.
Crews have cleaned up 30,000 tonnes of green waste along more than 2,200kms of roads (both sides) across 91 suburbs following January’s weather event. This is the equivalent to covering the distance from Townsville to Albury (NSW)/Wodonga (VIC) and back.
Local Recovery and Resilience Group Chair Mark Molachino has thanked the community for their patience and help during the clean-up effort.
“This has been an incredible task by our crews and contractors to complete in the conditions they had to endure, and I want to thank them for the work they did,” Cr Molachino said.
“The ongoing wet weather and heatwave has made it tougher for our crews and a massive thank you must go to them all for their work for carrying out the work safely in completing this challenging task.
“This was one of the biggest clean-up tasks Townsville City Council has ever had to organise and to get it complete within less five weeks of Ex-TC Kirrily impacting our region is a huge accomplishment for everyone involved.
“A big thank you must also go to residents for their assistance and understanding during the clean-up.
“While the green waste kerbside collection has finished, remember it is free to take your green waste to any of our transfer stations all year round.”
