- Kuranda Scenic Railway services have resumed operation today (Tuesday, 22 September 2026).
- Bridge repairs have been completed after a defect was identified earlier this month during routine inspections.
- Crews from across the state were mobilised to complete repairs as safely and as quickly as possible.
Kuranda Scenic Railway services have resumed following the completion of bridge stabilisation works on the Kuranda Range.
The Kuranda Range was closed earlier this month after a bridge defect was identified during routine inspections.
Queensland Rail has increased inspections across the network following several intensive wet seasons.
Queensland Rail Head of Regional Scott Cornish said safety remained Queensland Rail’s number one priority.
“Thanks to our inspections program, crews identified the issue early, allowing us to undertake the necessary repairs”, Mr Cornish said.
“We know how important the Kuranda Scenic Railway is to the local community and tourism industry, so we mobilised maintenance crews and engineers from across Queensland to complete the works as quickly and safely as possible.
“The works included placing rocks and additional supports beneath the bridge to stabilise the structure. During future planned track closures, crews will conduct additional upgrades to this bridge to extend its service life.
“While rainfall last week impacted recovery efforts by one day, crews worked to restore the line as soon as it was safe to do so.
“During the closure, Queensland Rail also provided eligible customers with road coach travel to help maintain access to tourism experiences in Kuranda.
“I’d like to thank our employees, contractors, customers and tourism operators for their patience and support while this important work was completed, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back onboard.”
