With 10 per cent of Tasmanians living south of Hobart, Tasmanian Labor has announced its ‘catch up’ plan to support the massive growth in the area and participation in sport.
The plan injects $13.5 million to support participation in community basketball, netball, pickleball, cricket, little athletics, Australian rules football and soccer. It includes:
- $8 million to develop two new multi-purpose indoor courts at the Kingborough Sports Centre
- $2.5 million to develop a new oval, turning the twin ovals in the triplet ovals for cricket and Australian rules football.
- $3 million to redevelop Gormley Park for little athletics and soccer.
We are experiencing significant population growth south of Hobart and this a sporting hub for the whole of southern Tasmania. But it is bursting at the seams.
We have young cricketers playing home games at Pontville and a lack of training facilities for almost every other sport. There are times when basketballers and netballers simply cannot get a court. If we can expand the facilities we will allow even more people to enjoy them.
One of the best things we can do for preventative health is get more people participating in community sport. That’s what this plan does.
