Labor have lost their way on energy

Dean Young, Liberal Member for Franklin

Tasmanian Labor’s pathetic response to the Liberal Government securing Marinus Link on Tasmania’s terms shows how desperate and ignorant they are on energy.

Liberal Member for Franklin, Dean Young, said Labor’s thought bubble of a price cap is a dangerous threat to our energy security.

“Labor talks up supply issues but want to interfere in the market with price caps, damaging competition and causing supply to drop,” Mr Young said.

“By contrast Marinus Link will firm up long-term energy supply and the Liberal Government’s Renewable Energy Dividend will deliver money into the pockets of every Tasmanian household in the first half of 2024.

“It’s simple. When Hydro makes money, Tasmanians will save money.

“We are also delivering real energy bill relief, here and now. There is $250 for eligible residential customers in the 2023-24 year, and again in the 2024-25 year.

“This payment means concession customer relief has increased from $575 to $880 this financial year, up $305 from 2022-23. That $880 is 42 per cent of a typical residential customer’s annual bill.”

Mr Young said the Marinus Link Project is a long-term plan to grow power supply, ensure energy security, create jobs and drive renewable generation development in the State.

“Marinus on Tasmania’s terms is an important step in our Tasmania First Energy Guarantee which will ensure we continue to deliver among the lowest power prices in the nation,” Mr Young said.

“Labor simply can’t be trusted on energy. Under them power prices increased 65 per cent.

“And contrary to their claims, their plans would destroy competition and damage supply, leading to higher prices for households and businesses.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government’s is sticking to our long-term plan on energy and doing what matters for all Tasmanians.”
