NSW Labor Leader, Michael Daley, and Deputy Labor Leader, Penny Sharpe, have announced that Labor will invest $4.2 million to help establish a NSW Pride Health and Community Centre, if elected later this month.
The Centre will:
- Foster and celebrate diversity in NSW;
- Facilitate the establishment of a community centre dedicated to equality and the advancement of LGBTIQ health, wellbeing and community connections; and
- Build capacity for LGBTIQ community organisations.
The Centre will be a partnership between Inner West Council and ACON and will meet the growing needs of health services for the LGBTIQ community. It will also be a place for LGBQTIQ community organisations.
“Every single person in our community deserves to feel safe, secure and supported,” Mr Daley said.
“If I become Premier, Labor will invest in the state’s first Pride Health and Community Centre, which will provide a safe and welcoming place for the LGBTIQ community, along with much-needed health facilities.”
Inner West Council has resolved to provide a building within the Inner West Local Government Area for the purposes of a NSW Pride Health and Community Centre, and NSW Labor will fund the fit-out and establishment of the Centre with a commitment of $4.2 million.
Deputy Labor Leader, Penny Sharpe, said: “Pride Centres are important hubs for the LGBTIQ community. They are a gathering place as well as a place to get vital information, services and support.”
Member for Summer Hill, Jo Haylen, said: “The Inner West is the centre of a vibrant, creative and diverse LGBTIQ community. The Pride Centre will be a welcome addition to the services and support in our community.”
Inner West Mayor, Darcy Byrne, said: “The Inner West has been the spiritual home of the LGBTIQ community for many decades. Establishing a Pride Centre here will make sure the community has a permanent place in the Inner West into the future.”
