Kyogle Landcare, in partnership with OzFish Unlimited, is excited to announce the ‘Kyogle Carp Out’, a community initiative being held Saturday 10th February, aimed at eradicating the invasive carp species from Fawcett’s Creek.
This collaboration will restore the balance of the local ecosystem by addressing the environmental challenges posed by carp, known for threatening native fish populations and compromising water quality.
The event promises a blend of educational insights and hands-on experience in carp removal, which will help restore native fish numbers and the habitats they rely on in the waterway.
Ryan Lungu, a Richmond River OzFish chapter representative, shares his perspective on the initiative.
“Carp are a major concern in the Richmond River catchment, and this is our chance to combat the issue head-on.
“The Kyogle Carp Out exemplifies the power of collaboration, bringing together OzFish, Landcare, and the community through our Driving Fish Habitat Action project, supported by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts”, said Ryan.
In a thoughtful approach to sustainability, the event will also feature a unique aspect where the removed carp will be repurposed into local compost systems, highlighting a commitment to environmental responsibility.
The day will culminate in a celebration of these community efforts, featuring a lunchtime BBQ and the distribution of prizes generously provided by sponsor BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing, to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of all volunteers.
