Community engagement on proposed new pet-keeping laws in the City of Logan is about to close.
This weekend (September 14-15) is the final opportunity for residents to provide feedback as part of a review by Logan City Council that aims to ensure sections of the cat and dog keeping laws better suit our changing city.
The review, under the City of Logan Animal Care Strategy 2018-2022, has examined some laws relating to the keeping of cats and dogs on certain property types and sizes.
A record 2346 responses from Logan residents were received in the three-month ‘Have Your Say’ period of community engagement earlier this year.
A second round of engagement entitled ‘Did We Hear You Correctly?’ has run since August 26 and ends this weekend.
Council will have an information stand at the Beenleigh Show on Saturday, September 14, at the Beenleigh Showgrounds from 9am to 7pm.
Feedback will also be sought at the Albert Valley Community Festival, at the Cedar Creek Hall on Sunday, September 15, from 10am to 2pm.
Council has sought the community’s views on local law provisions including:
- The number of cats and dogs a resident can keep depending on property size
- Length of dog leads in public places
- Effective control of cats in public places
- Enclosures for problem dogs on smaller residential premises
- Effective barking control
The City of Logan is home to more than 60,000 registered cats and dogs.
Logan City Council Director Community Services Katie Barton-Harvey, said feedback from the review would ensure Logan continues to be a leading council in animal management and community education.
“The response from the community to this important review has been outstanding and we thank everyone who took the time to get involved,” Ms Barton-Harvey said.
“The next stage of the review will see the information received from the community considered for our future law-making process which is expected to continue through to the end of the year.”
