Lawyers welcome proposed rental reform with improved protections for tenants

Maurice Blackburn Principal Lawyer, Jillian Barrett, who specialises public liability law, has welcomed the release today of the Queensland Government’s action plan for tenancy law reform.

“The prescription of minimum housing standards, including the strengthening of the repairs and maintenance process for tenants in Queensland is a major step in the right direction,” Ms Barrett said

“These important reforms recognised that as Queenslanders now top the list when it comes to the proportion of people renting, there is an increasing need for clarification of our tenancy rights and obligations.

“Unfortunately we are seeing an increasing number of tenants and visitors to rental properties having to make injury claims after repeatedly raising maintenance issues with property managers.”

Ms Barrett said the Queensland Government’s proposed reforms which improved property manager accountability and conduct are particularly welcome.

“Action to ensure rental accommodation is well-maintained, to protect tenant health and safety, is an important improvement

“We look forward to these reforms and commend the Queensland Government for including these changes as part of this substantial tenancy law reform proposal,” Ms Barrett said
