Let Music Play And Dance Begin

Dance and music therapy can help support people with dementia by accessing memories, emotions, and a desire to connect. So, let the music play, and let the dance begin with some events coming up this April and May.

While there is currently no known cure for dementia, the importance of physical activity, a healthy diet, and social connection have well-known benefits for people living with dementia. In addition to these lifestyle factors, various therapies are available to improve mood, communication and self-esteem. Among these, dance therapy and music therapy stand out as powerful tools for enhancing the emotional wellbeing of people with dementia.

Dance therapy

Dance therapy uses movement to help people managing their physical and emotional health. It provides a unique opportunity for people with dementia to express their emotions when perhaps their words have escaped them or might not speak the same language as those around them. Through movement, people can express joy, sadness and love.

Music therapy

Music therapy enables people to make positive changes to their mood and emotional state. Music lights up emotional memories and can bring joy and calm.

Benefits of dance and music therapy include:

  • Social connection: People with dementia often report experiencing isolation and loneliness. Dance and music therapy offers a safe space for people to connect socially where they can share eye contact, laughter and touch
  • Intergenerational: Music bridges the generational gap. Sharing familiar tunes enables common ground

Reduces stress: Music can sooth and create a calming effect, reducing anxiety and depression. This has positive benefits for both individuals with dementia and their carers and loved ones.

We are offering the below free opportunities in April and May 2024 to experience a dance and music therapy session. Each session will be delivered by a qualified therapist.
