Liberals fail community on Launceston CBD TasTAFE closure

Tasmanian Labor
  • Will Hodgman to close TasTAFE Launceston CBD
  • Rockliff yet to answer basic questions on closure
  • Tasmanian jobseekers will suffer
  • Will Hodgman and Jeremy Rockliff need to come clean with northern Tasmanians over the future of the Launceston CBD TasTAFE campus.

Last week the Examiner exposed the Liberals secret plan to close the Launceston TasTAFE campus.

Shadow Minister for TAFE, University and Skills, Michelle O’Byrne, said the closure was unfair and the Government had questions to answer.

“Will Hodgman and Jeremy Rockliff have broken TAFE and now they’re shutting the doors on the campus in the Launceston CBD,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“Despite a string of course cancellations and delays at TAFE, the Government plans to further destroy the public training provider.

“Tasmania’s jobless rate is among the worst in the nation and 3,500 full time jobs have been lost since the election – now is not the time to close Launceston’s TAFE.

“Jeremy Rockliff still hasn’t even answered basic questions on the Liberal’s plans for the existing Launceston site and wouldn’t confirm what discussions had taken place about a potential sale.

“The Liberals have form on backroom deals and secret sales of public assets, Jeremy Rockliff needs to tell the community exactly what has been discussed and with who.

“Tasmanians deserve a Government focused on delivering a better, fairer TAFE system.”
