Liberals’ “fast-track” Huntingfield housing process stalls

Tasmanian Labor

The Liberal Government’s failure to progress a housing development at Huntingfield is further evidence of their inability to deliver important infrastructure.

This government promised 500 new homes at Huntingfield, with legislation passed in 2018 to “fast track” the process.

But nearly five years later, the site remains a vacant block of land, while thousands of Tasmanians still wait for housing.

The Liberals have tried to lay the blame at the feet of the Kingborough Council, even though they are fully aware that the council approved the Development Application a year ago.

The Government knows the delays have been caused by them, not the council, but they still can’t tell Tasmanians when the first house will be built at Huntingfield.

Labor raised this important issue in Parliament today but, sadly, the Housing Minister Guy Barnett just added salt to the wound by declaring that no government in history has done more on housing, even though thousands of Tasmanians don’t have a secure roof over their heads.

This government continually makes big promises, then fails to deliver, leaving Tasmanians without the help and support they desperately need.

Everyone who needs housing now wants the government to focus on the real priorities in their lives, not a $750 million stadium most Tasmanians don’t want.
