Liberals in chaos as another Minister quits

The resignation of a second Gutwein Government Minister in as many weeks is more evidence of a government in chaos and disarray.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said the resignation of the former Sports Minister Jane Howlett shows the Premier is struggling to maintain control of his own government.

“Just two weeks ago, the Education Minister Sarah Courtney quit, following her holiday to France in the lead-up to school returning in the midst of COVID,” Ms White said.

“Now, we have the Minister for Racing, Small Business, Women, Hospitality and Events and Disability Services quitting, and a government that appears to be imploding.

“Peter Gutwein has already had to dig deep to fill the gap left by Sarah Courtney, with a lack of experience in his ranks and other Ministers already clearly overwhelmed by their portfolios.

“Now with Jane Howlett’s departure from the Ministry, the Premier faces even slimmer pickings for a suitable replacement.

“It’s bad enough that Mr Gutwein caused more uncertainty and chaos yesterday by announcing the abolition of the Department of Communities Tasmania, less than four years after it was established, leaving several services under a cloud.

“But to lose a second Minister within two weeks, forcing yet another reshuffle, shows a government in chaos.

“Tasmanians need leadership and action to address the cost-of-living and other pressures they face every day. They deserve so much better than a government that is falling apart.”
