Liminal Places: A Captivating Exploration of Marginalised Landscapes

Georges River Council

Hurstville Museum and Gallery are pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition in the Dragon’s Lair Gallery, Liminal Places.

The exhibition features the extraordinary works of Mei Zhao, a multi-disciplinary artist based in Sydney, who draws inspiration from her unique life journey.

Having grown up in Tianjin, China, before immigrating to Australia in 1994, her work has been influenced by her experiences as a forced farm labourer during the Cultural Revolution and her subsequent life as an immigrant.

Liminal Places explores overlooked and marginalised urban and rural landscapes, with a particular focus on Chinese market gardens in Sydney and regional New South Wales.

Inspired by the traditions of Chinese landscape painting and Indigenous Australian art, Mei’s artistic process focuses on creating an expressive abstract representation of landscape through slow and multiple developing processes.

Mei Zhao’s artistic practice encompasses painting, drawing, printmaking, and installation, allowing her to express the complexities of living in different landscapes with cross-cultural approaches.

Georges River Councils Mayor Nick Katris said: “I invite everyone to immerse themselves in the evocative world of ‘Liminal Places’.

“This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the interconnectedness of cultural heritage and the landscapes we inhabit.”

The community is invited to join in the celebrations of Mei Zhao’s artistic achievements at the upcoming exhibition opening.
