Construction works are progressing on the Territory Labor Government’s $17.5 million Turbocharging Tourism Litchfield Central Valley project, opening up more visitor experiences at Litchfield National Park and creating local jobs.
Continuing to upgrade our Territory parks and reserves allows the NT to be ahead of the game in preparation for the COVID-19 rebound when domestic and international tourism returns.
Stage 3 of the Litchfield Central Valley project has been awarded to local company, Ostojic Group and includes the construction of:
- a 4WD access track,
- two loop roads to the campsites, and
- 10 campsites within the northern campgrounds with drop toilets and an information shelter.
The additional campsites will be spread out, offering visitors a more private outback experience than other campgrounds in the Park. Works on Stage 3 will begin in August 2020 and will be completed in early 2021 in time for the dry season.
So far, the Litchfield National Park upgrades have seen 18km of access road works and design works for Stage 4 nearing completion. Stage 4 includes the construction of the remaining two campgrounds, two recreational areas, and the staging and lookout area at the top of the escarpment due for release in the coming months.
The site names for the new Central Valley sites have been released and reflect the plant species and rock formations in the area:
- Site 1 Cycad Springs Campground
- Site 2 Kapok Pools
- Site 3 Bloodwood Creek Campground
- Site 4 Crystal Springs Campground
- Site 5 Red Rock Gorge
- Site 6 Central Valley Escarpment
As noted by the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Lauren Moss:
“We are continuing to deliver on this game changing $17.5 million Litchfield Central Valley project.
“Next year we will open up new camping and swimming spots, facilities and infrastructure to further enhance the experience for locals and tourists, once they can safely visit us again.
“We want Territorians to explore their own backyard and the upgrades to Litchfield National Park are part of making sure our assets are maintained and enticing.
As noted by the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:
“The Territory Labor Government is focused on creating jobs for locals at this challenging time and our $17.5 million investment into Litchfield National Park has already supported three local businesses.
“Stage 4 tender opportunities for the remaining campgrounds, recreational areas and staging and lookout area will be released in the coming months, further supporting jobs and injecting funds into the local economy.”
