Fourteen local artists have put the finishing touches on the Nicholson Street, Bairnsdale, streetscape upgrade by vinyl wrapping the bollards with 23 unique artworks.

The East Gippsland Shire Council-funded project is designed to improve pedestrian access and provide the opportunity for a vibrant outdoor culture.

Mayor Cr John White said that through the project there was an opportunity to transform the traditionally plain but necessary bollards by showcasing creative and vibrant works of art by local artists.

“This was a fantastic opportunity to turn the bollards into works of art that contribute to creating the vibrant outdoor culture,” Cr White said.

“The artwork celebrates our community’s talent and creativity. It’s great to see local artists involved from the start and working alongside council staff.”

The local artists involved were Alan Solomon, Amy Joseph, Cheri O’Donnell, Crystal Stubbs, Deanne Howlett, Jimage, Josephine Jacobi, Lee Nickless, Linden Dean, Rachael Pollac, Rachel Habben, Rhonda Gray Skye Wilde and Tracey Solomon.

In addition to contributing artwork, Tracey Solomon worked tirelessly in coordinating the artists.

“The artists who were involved overcame the challenges of the bushfires this summer and I appreciate all the effort they put in,” Tracey said.

“We have such a diverse range of artists in this area and it’s a great way to showcase their talent. Not all the artists involved are traditional street artists. The vinyl wraps have allowed artists such as glassblowers to showcase their medium in a completely different way than what they normally would.

“I also want to thank East Gippsland Shire Council for supporting local artists. With everything happening in the world at the moment, it’s great to have something so vibrant for people to see when they leave the house.”

Each bollard wrap includes identification of the artist.

The remaining pavement stenciling is scheduled for the near future to complete the project.
