Local artists to collaborate on unique new mural at Casuarina Library

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin Libraries and LAUNCH Darwin are seeking young artists to work collaboratively on an original hand-painted mural inside the Casuarina Library youth area.

Submissions are open for artists who would like to paint an original character as part of the mural.

The theme of the mural is “Darwin and other worlds” and will see successful applicants working with a professional artist to integrate their original styles and characters into a cohesive work of art.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said this was a unique opportunity for Darwin-based artists to showcase their creativity and work with other local artists.

“We pride ourselves on being a vibrant and colourful city, and to have such a distinctive work on show, which has been done in collaboration with new and emerging artists, will be a great asset for our city,” Mr Vatskalis said.

The opportunity is open to artists between 15 and 25 years of age and no previous mural painting experience is required.

“The selected artists will receive a $150 honorarium for their participation in the program, so I encourage artists to submit an expression of interest via our website,” Mr Vatskalis said.

When determining the final artists, City of Darwin will consider whether the style fits the theme of the mural and is suitable for a public space, how well the chosen artists’ characters and styles work together and the skill and creativity of the artists’ work.

Artists must be available to attend four painting sessions between 9 – 10 December and 16 – 17 December 2023.

The City of Darwin Libraries LAUNCH platform provides young people aged between 12 and 25 in Darwin with quality opportunities for active community participation.

Applications close at midnight on Tuesday 31 October 2023, to submit an expression of interest visit launchdarwin.com.au/casuarina-library-mural-eoi/
