A Geraldton company has been awarded the contract to build the second stage of the new $12.3 million Greenough prison female compound.
Crothers Construction will build new support buildings at the compound, which will be separated from the main prison with a new pulse-energised fence.
The support buildings will include medical, education and industrial programs so the majority of female services can be delivered in the new female compound.
The second stage build is expected to employ 110 people, 87 of them from regional WA, and 24 apprentices, 19 from regional WA. About 83 per cent of the local content is expected to be spent in regional Western Australia.
Construction of the new pulse-energised barrier to replace the previously inadequate security fence is now underway and is expected to be completed by late November.
The new female compound support buildings are expected to be completed by June 11, 2021.
As stated by Corrective Services Minister Francis Logan:
“It is great to see another local Geraldton company secure work on this $12.3 million project.
“This means more jobs for locals and more money put into the Geraldton economy.
“The new female compound will make a significant difference to how female offenders are managed at the prison.
“The new support buildings will limit the time the female offenders spend in the main prison and the pulse-energised fence is a far more appropriate barrier between the two areas than was previously in place.”
