Local community organisations to benefit from food relief grants

The Rockliff Liberal Government is ensuring all Tasmanians have access to safe, nutritious, quality food.

In April, the Government announced its $300,000 Tasmanian Community Food Relief Grants Program to help organisations provide much-needed food relief to those in need.

The program provides grants of up to $10,000 over the next twelve months to eligible organisations that provide either low-cost or free ready-to-eat meals and food hampers.

Thirty-five organisations have now been approved for funding through the program.

One of these local community organisations is the Italian Australian Seniors Welfare Association, which has been successful in their application for a $9,900 grant to expand their current Community Van Food Relief Project. The project is being delivered in partnership with Hobart City Mission, the Lions Club of Kingborough and Hazell Brothers.

Minister for Community Services and Development, Nic Street, said the Association will now be able to provide 1,140 ready-to-eat meals and 420 hampers to the community.

“We know there are Tasmanians out there doing it tough and we want to support local community organisations throughout the State, like the Italian Australian Seniors Welfare Association of Tasmania, who are doing some incredible work to provide food relief,” he said.

“The total funding of $300,000 through the grant program will ensure Tasmanians in need have a place to go to get a hot meal, or a hamper to cook in their own home.

“This Government is building Tasmania’s future, and at the same time supporting our most vulnerable so they don’t get left behind.”

Italian Day Centre manager Stefano Lufi said the Association was grateful for the Government support.

“The Italian Day Centre and our partners strongly believe in supporting hungry families and individuals who are struggling with the high cost of living,” he said.

“This grant will put food on the table for the Huonville and Sorell communities by providing extra ready-to-eat meals and hampers over the next 12 months.”
