Colac Otway farmers are eligible to take part in a silage plastic recycling trial.
The trial, being run by Dairy Australian and funded through the Commonwealth Government’s National Product Stewardship Investment Fund, is set to begin this month and offers famers an opportunity to be environmentally responsible in the disposal of silage plastic waste.
The trial is open to up to 100 farms in western Victoria, with participants selected to provide diversity in farm sizes, locations and farm type.
In an effort to reduce plastic to landfill, the trial is aimed at Western District farmers who use silage and would like to see the plastic waste from their silage recycled.
Although the trial is being run by Dairy Australia, it’s open to beef farmers who use silage as well.
The trial outcomes will inform a national collection and recycling system for plastic, championed by Dairy Australia, with input from farmers and industry stakeholders across the supply chain.
Participants in the trial will be able to choose to drop off the plastic at waste transfer sites located at Killarney, Peterborough, Simpson, Naroghid and Alvie for free or choose to book on-farm collection of the silage plastic for a small fee.
