Kempsey Shire Council welcomed residents behind the scenes during Local Government Week. Community members attending took the chance to learn about Council’s work across culture, tourism, flood awareness, water security and essential infrastructure.
Slim Dusty Centre tour
The program included a visit to the Slim Dusty Centre, highlighting the important role local facilities play in preserving our stories, celebrating creativity and strengthening the region’s economy.
Big Map Flood Experience
Council also hosted another Big Map Flood Experience, giving residents a hands-on way to better understand the Macleay Valley catchment and how floods move through the region. Using a large-scale satellite map, and drawing on lively discussion among participants, the session helped build awareness of flood behaviour, local geography and preparedness.
Steuart McIntyre Dam tour
A guided tour of Steuart McIntyre Dam and the new Water Treatment Plant gave attendees a closer look at the infrastructure and planning involved in delivering safe, reliable water services. The tour helped connect residents with the work happening behind the scenes to support long-term water security and service reliability across the Kempsey Shire.
Local Government Week is an annual opportunity to highlight the broad role councils play in community life. For our shire, this year’s events helped residents meet staff, ask questions and gain a better understanding of how Council services contribute to a connected, prepared and resilient community.
