Local manufacturing top of the class for new modular school builds

  • New $15 million double-storey modular building for Shenton College being locally manufactured in Kwinana
  • Cook Government creating local manufacturing jobs for Western Australians
  • Additional classrooms will help accommodate growth in student enrolments at Shenton College
  • Similar building methods to be used to expand Highgate Primary School

Premier Roger Cook and Education Minister Dr Tony Buti today inspected the new $15 million double-storey modular building that is being manufactured locally in Kwinana to help address enrolment growth at Shenton College.

Built by Ausco Modular workers in Kwinana, the innovative double-storey building is progressing well and will accommodate an additional 300 secondary students once completed, helping to ease enrolment pressures while minimising the impact of the build on school students and staff.

The state-of-the-art facilities will include 11 general learning classrooms, a science classroom, staff areas and toilet facilities, and are expected to be completed in time for Term 3 this year.

Shenton College currently has 2,850 students enrolled with an additional 38 students at the co-located Shenton College Deaf Education Centre.

The State Government announced this week that Highgate Primary School will also receive a two-storey modular building to address enrolment growth, until the new inner-city primary school proposed for East Perth opens.

The $12 million build will include six general learning classrooms for 160 students, a multi-purpose teaching space, teacher facilities and additional toilets for students and staff.

As stated by Premier Roger Cook:

“My Government is committed to creating good manufacturing jobs for Western Australians, as we work to grow and diversify the State’s economy.

“The construction of this two-storey $15 million modular school building here in Kwinana is supporting more than 100 local jobs.

“The new modular build will help to minimise any impact on student learning during construction and ease the immediate enrolment pressure at Shenton College.

“We are also putting $12 million towards a similar solution for Highgate Primary School that will be built right here in WA.”

As stated by Education Minister Dr Tony Buti:

“Modular buildings are an efficient way of accommodating for growth while minimising disruption to students and staff on the school site.

“I’m pleased we’re able to provide state-of-the-art facilities for students in an innovative and fast way.

“I’m sure the Shenton College community is excited about the impressive new facilities and I look forward to visiting when they are on the school’s site.”
