Logan Art Gallery has won a prestigious Queensland Gallery and Museum Achievement Award (GAMAA) for the fourth consecutive year.

The 2019 GAMAA award was for the community art exhibition and cultural program He kākano āhau (I am a seed) in the Engagement for Organisations with Paid Staff category.

He kākano āhau (I am a seed) showcased contemporary Māori arts and culture.

It comprised an exhibition of artworks by local Māori artists, a large collaborative artwork made by Logan’s community under the guidance of artists and complementary public programs including a cultural family fun day.

The project was developed over 18 months with local New Zealand artists, First Nations Elders and Logan Art Gallery staff and was exhibited late last year at the gallery.

The award, presented at a ceremony at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre last night, was accepted by Logan Art Gallery Co-ordinator Michael Wardell, on behalf of Logan City Council, and the local contributing New Zealand artists and community project co-ordinator Amy Clarke.

Artists featured in the award-winning exhibition included Mihimai Nikora, Tania Hapai Heta, Leona Morete, Chermene Castle, Jackie Hawkins, Merri Randell, Teraimana Tahiata and Onesian (Allen Vili).

The project was supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the State Government and Logan City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
