The City of Logan was thankfully spared the terrible damage of last summer’s bushfires.
But that doesn’t mean Logan City Council is complacent about the coming fire season.
Already Council has conducted five hazard reduction burns across the city to reduce fuel loads and the severity of any fires.
On Wednesday, crews conducted a burn at Cornubia Forest Park, Cornubia.
So far 38 hectares have been burned across the city and more are planned if conditions allow.
City Planning, Economic Development and Environment Committee Chair Councillor Jon Raven said no one should underestimate Logan’s bushfire potential.
“Logan has more than 900 parks and reserves and a lot of semi-rural and rural properties so the risk of fires is high,” Cr Raven said.
“Council takes the safety of our community seriously, which is why it’s important to be proactive ahead of this year’s bushfire season.”
Cr Raven said favourable conditions have allowed Council to conduct more burns this winter.
“Last year the weather worked against us and we could only conduct three hazard reduction burns.
“Fortunately conditions this year have been more favourable and have allowed more burns to take place.
“But it’s important to remember that they only reduce the bushfire risk, they certainly don’t eliminate it.”
