Macquarie Marshes: environmental outcomes of 2016-17 floods

The Macquarie Marshes is one of Australia’s iconic wetlands.

Water for the environment is helping to increase the resilience of the Macquarie Marshes – allowing the wetland to bounce back when larger, natural flows return to the river system. From the moment the water arrives, through its peak and its recession, native plants and animals are responding. Frogs and insects are the first to respond. There’s a flush of green as plants put on fresh growth, then the birds arrive and the fish move through. And there are flow-on benefits for nearby farmland as well.
