Transport for NSW will start of work on the intersection upgrade at Macquarie Road, Myall Road and Munibung Road, Cardiff from Sunday 22 May.
The Australian and NSW Governments are funding this $3.4 million project through the Federal Stimulus Road Safety program. An additional $700,000 has been funded through Council, Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation and developer contributions.
Transport for NSW will carry out the work, which includes:
- extending the right turning lane on Macquarie Road into Munibung Road
- reconfiguring the lanes on Myall Road to provide two extended right turn lanes, a through lane and left turn lane
- reconfiguring the existing left turn lane from Macquarie Road into Munibung Road to be a combined through and left turn lane
- extending the two southbound departure lanes on Macquarie Road by 200 metres from the intersection. This includes installing a new footpath, new bicycle lane and relocating power poles
- providing an additional pedestrian crossing on the northern side of the intersection (Cardiff Toyota to Cardiff RSL)
- upgrading pedestrian ramps
- making adjustments to the kerbs and traffic light infrastructure at the intersection to better accommodate heavy vehicle movements
- banning the right turn from Munibung Road. Motorists would need to use Pendlebury Road to turn right onto Macquarie Road
- installation of new road drainage on Macquarie Road
- removing parking permanently along sections of Macquarie Road to improve traffic flow through the intersection, particularly during peak hours.
Works will be undertaken between 7pm and 5am from Sunday to Thursday and expect to complete the work in early 2023. On occasions, day work will be required from Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm and Transport for NSW may need to carry out additional night work on Friday between 7pm and 5am.
There will be some temporary traffic changes to ensure the work zone is safe. Lane closures and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place during work hours and may affect travel times.
Parking in the area will be impacted during construction. Residents and businesses will be notified prior to restrictions being put in place.
