Families in Sydney’s south-west have a new place to relax, play, and connect with nature, with the Minns Labor Government today opening Toggerai Park in Appin, as part of the Parks for People program.
Located just north of Appin town centre, the 17-hectare park transforms former pastureland into a vibrant public space featuring walking trails, nature-based play areas, picnic facilities and open green space for the growing local community.
Delivered in partnership with the Wollondilly Shire Council, the park has been carefully designed to complement and protect the surrounding bushland and nearby koala habitat, while creating new opportunities for recreation, social connection, and outdoor activity.
Key features of Toggerai Park include:
- one kilometre of walking trails
- pedestrian access from Appin Road and a dedicated car park
- nature-inspired play spaces featuring a lyrebird play structure, flying fox and swings
- shaded picnic areas with barbeques, accessible amenities, and bubblers
- preservation of existing native vegetation across the site.
The Park’s design reflects extensive community consultation and celebrates the area’s Aboriginal heritage. Its name Toggerai – the Dharawal name for the neighbouring Georges River – and the signature lyrebird play structure recognise the cultural significance of the site and the lyrebird as a totem of the Dharawal people.
The community is invited to celebrate the opening at a free Community Day on Saturday 19 July, featuring a fun run, lawn games, children’s story time, and food and refreshments.
This builds on the Government’s wider investment in better communities, including $520 million for open space and active transport in Transport Oriented Development precincts and $200 million for the Faster Assessments Incentive Program.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully said:
“Great neighbourhoods need great public spaces, and Toggerai Park gives Appin families a fantastic new place to spend time together, get active and enjoy the outdoors.
“As more people choose to call Sydney’s south-west home, we’re not only unlocking more homes, but we’re also delivering the parks, open spaces and community facilities that make these neighbourhoods great places to live.
“Toggerai Park is delivering high-quality green space that this community will enjoy for generations to come.”
Member for Campbelltown, Greg Warren said:
“Appin is one of the fastest-growing communities in New South Wales and locals deserve the same quality green spaces as anywhere else in Sydney.
“Toggerai Park is exactly what this community has been waiting for – a place for families to come together, for kids to play and explore, and for residents to connect with the natural environment right on their doorstep.
“The Minns Labor Government is delivering for Appin, and I look forward to Toggerai Park becoming a cherished part of this community for years to come.”
