Major construction on Stage 2 of the Yan Yean Road Upgrade is now underway in Melbourne’s outer north-east.
Work has started on delivering an extra lane in each direction between Kurrak and Bridge Inn roads, upgraded intersections, and a new walking and cycling path.
The upgrades will improve traffic flow and make travel more reliable around one of Melbourne’s fastest-growing regions.
The first two intersection upgrades are on track to be completed in early 2027.
The Yan Yean Road, Bridge Inn Road and Doctors Gully Road intersection will be transformed from a congested roundabout into a modern signalised intersection.
New traffic lights, extra turning lanes and pedestrian crossings will be installed, along with an extra lane in each direction on Yan Yean Road.
The Doreen business precinct will benefit from improved access, new community spaces, upgraded bus stops, and new cycling and walking paths.
Traffic lights will also be installed at the Activity Way intersection – a key recommendation from community consultation.
The designs protect several River Red Gums and the historic General Store – both part of the area’s rural character.
Activity Way will close from early November until late December, but Yan Yean Road will remain open.
Local shops will be accessible via Bridge Inn Road while the nearby service station can be accessed from Yan Yean Road.
These upgrades are jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments through the $3.14 billion Suburban Roads Upgrades – South Eastern Roads and Northern Roads program.
The Australian Government is contributing $1.58 billion towards the package, with the Victorian Government providing $1.57 billion.
These upgrades are part of a broader range of transport improvements being rolled out across Melbourne’s outer north-east, including:
The Watson Street Interchange and Northern Highway Intersection upgrades in Wallan,
Road Blitz – Donnybrook Road Upgrades,
Road Blitz – Mickleham Road Upgrade – Stage 2, and
The Camerons Lane Interchange Project.
