Locals have wasted no time in taking to the new Mittagong North Walking Network, now connecting the town centre to Lake Alexandria, and making it more convenient to get around town on foot. Made possible by $330,187 in grant funding under the Transport for NSW Get NSW Active Program, it’s an investment in promoting wellbeing by encouraging walking and cycling.
“It was wonderful to see people walking the path from the very first moment we took down the construction barriers,” says WSC Manager Assets and Project Delivery, Shaun Robinson. ” They’re loving that they can now choose to walk or ride to the school, library, family medical centre, RSL or theatre in the heart of town, or follow the path all the way to the lake, and the whole network has been made fully accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters.”
Wingecarribee Shire Council completed the works on target this July, delivering 820metres of 1.5m wide footpath to connect five key segments of the township of Mittagong, and link the town centre to Lake Alexandria.
The project is part of our Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan for reconnecting communities across our Shire.
Council successfully applied for the grant funding in February of 2022, to progress our Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plans for better connecting communities across our Shire. Residents without access to a car can now travel safely and conveniently around Mittagong on the purpose-designed pathway. “Community members of all ages seem to be enjoying the opportunity to get out and about in the sunshine and fresh air,” Shaun says. “Our hope is that having this new network in the neighbourhood will motivate people to do more physical activity on a daily basis.”
Giving people the choice to walk, instead of drive, around Mittagong is expected to also have the flow-on effect of better traffic flow.
