The ACT Government is continuing to transform the Canberra Hospital campus to support the ACT community into the future.
Delivery of new state-of-the art facilities under the Canberra Hospital Master Plan will transform the Hospital over the next 20 years.
This includes a new Pathology and Clinical Support Building as an early priority.
The new building will be located on the site of the current Buildings 6 and 23 and public consultation opens today on a development application for their demolition.
A contract has also awarded to EY to support continued planning for three new buildings for the campus. EY will work with the architects that developed the Master Plan, STH, to prepare functional designs, models of care and a business case for the new Pathology and Clinical Support Building as well as future inpatient buildings.
Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said locating the new Pathology and Clinical Support Building close to the new Critical Services Building – which will open next year – was identified in the Master Plan and will support the modernisation of the campus for health workers and patients.
“The ACT Government is committed to healthcare that puts patients first, creates a safe environment for our staff with more opportunities for professional development, and provides the right facilities to meet the future health needs of the ACT and surrounding region,” Minister Stephen-Smith said.
“This is the next step in transforming the Canberra Hospital campus to ensure our dedicated teams can continue to provide high-quality care to support the health of our region.
“The demolition of Buildings 6 and 23 to make way for the new Pathology and Clinical Support Building is a significant step in further improving hospital services for Canberrans.
“This important new building will provide a state-of-the-art facility for staff whose work behind the scenes is vital to delivering health care in our hospitals and community facilities, enabling the modernisation and expansion of pathology services.”
Demolition of buildings 6 and 23 will likely begin in late 2023 to provide adequate time for the relocation of staff who currently work in these buildings.
