Man cahrged after Elpinstone incident

Police have charged a man following an incident in Elphinstone yesterday.

Local units were travelling along the Calder Freeway in Kyneton when they observed an SUV bearing stolen plates allegedly speeding about 4pm.

Another unit followed the car towards Elphinstone before the car stopped in Harmony Way and a female passenger got out and attempted to flee.

As police tried to intercept the car, it allegedly drove at the officers and a police firearm was discharged and a shot fired at the car.

The woman was arrested at the scene while the driver of the SUV allegedly fled and drove away towards Kyneton.

With the assistance of the Police Air Wing, officers on the ground intercepted the car on the Calder Freeway and arrested three men.

No one was injured during the incident and the Professional Standards Command has been notified as per normal protocol when a police firearm is discharged.

Detectives interviewed a 26-year-old Castlemaine woman, a 19-year-old Malmsbury man and a 23-year-old Dunolly man, who have since been released without charge.

The alleged driver, a 25-year-old Maryborough man, has been charged with Reckless Exposure of Police Officer to Risk by Driving, Dangerous Driving whilst pursued by Police, Fail to Stop Vehicle on Police Request, Handle Stolen Goods, Drive whilst suspended and drive unregistered motor vehicle.

He will appear at Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on 25 June.
