Man charged after allegedly making false report and initiating a police investigation, NSW

A man has been charged after allegedly providing false information and instigating a police investigation in the state’s Illawarra.

About 11.45pm on Saturday 31 December 2023, police received reports a 35-year-old man had been kidnapped from the Dombarton area.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District established Strike Force Evison to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Extensive efforts were made by the NSW Police Force to locate the man, and following inquiries, he was located in a car on Marshall Street, Dapto, about 10am on Sunday 1 January 2023.

As part of inquiries, it was established the man allegedly made up the story about his own kidnapping.

Following further inquiries, police attended a home on Sheaffes Road, Dombarton, and arrested the 35-year-old man, about 3.45pm yesterday (Thursday 12 January 2023).

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with make false accusation with intent subject other to investigation, and false representation resulting in police investigation.

He appeared in Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 13 January 2023) where he was granted conditional bail to reappear in the same court on Tuesday 24 January 2023.
