Man charged after motorcyclist injured in pursuit, crash – Ultimo

A man has been charged, and a motorcyclist remains in hospital, following a police pursuit and crash through Sydney this morning.

Officers attached to Eastern Suburbs Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were patrolling City Road, Camperdown, about midnight (Monday 6 July 2026), when they attempted to stop a sedan being driven without headlights, which then allegedly drove through a red traffic light.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated. Police will allege the vehicle was travelling at high speed along Wattle Street, Ultimo, when the pursuit was terminated due to safety concerns.

The sedan allegedly continued along Wattle Street to Maryann and Quay streets before returning to Wattle Street, where, about five minutes later, the sedan and a motorcycle had collided.

The motorcyclist – a 25-year-old man – was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with what police have been told are non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car – a 51-year-old man – was arrested at the scene before he was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for mandatory testing under police guard.

He has since been released and was taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with four offences,

  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously (2nd offence)
  • Drive vehicle under the influence of drugs
  • Proceed through red traffic light, and
  • Licence expired (more than two years).

The man, from Ryde, has been refused bail to appear in Bail Division Court 7 today.
