Man charged following alleged armed robbery in state’s north – Strike Force Bradfield

Robbery & Serious Crime Squad detectives have charged a man following an alleged armed robbery in the state’s north.

About 2.50pm on Tuesday 24 October 2023, police were called to a service station on Tweed Valley Way in Murwillumbah, following reports of an attempted robbery.

At the scene, officers attached to Tweed/Byron Police District were told an unknown man had allegedly produced a firearm, before he threatened staff and fired a single shot.

No one was injured, and the man fled the scene empty-handed in a white vehicle.

Local police established a crime scene and commenced inquiries before the matter was taken carriage of by State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad under Strike Force Barfield.

Following further extensive inquiries, about 9am yesterday (Tuesday 21 November 2023) strike force detectives – with assistance from the Tactical Operations Unit – executed a search warrant in Murwillumbah.

A 53-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

During a search, police located and seized a loaded sawn-off shotgun, shotgun ammunition and a vehicle.

The man was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station, where he was charged with seven offences including attempted robbery with dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm, manufacture a prohibited drug and other firearm related offences.

He was refused bail to appear in Tweed Heads Local Court today (Wednesday 22 November 2023).
