Man charged following suspicious grass fires in North East Victoria

Mitchell Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a series of arson incidents, including two large grass fires, earlier this year.

These incidents include:

• A fire in Moranding on the Northern Highway, where hay bales were allegedly set on fire near a property about 5am on 3 February.

• A suspicious fire on Broomfields Road in Northwood about 3.45pm on 17 February. It is alleged the fire was deliberately lit, before it spread about 1200 metres towards Cowles Road. The blaze impacted nearby properties, fences, and sheds.

• A second fire in Moranding on the Northern Highway, where 20 hay bales were allegedly set alight just after midnight on 4 March.

• An allegedly deliberate grass fire near Northwood and Bromfields Roads in Northwood about 1.40pm on 18 March.

• A car fire, in which an allegedly stolen vehicle was set on fire on Moores Road in Flowerdale about 4.30am on 29 April.

• A car fire in Arcadia South, in which another allegedly stolen car was set on fire in about 8.30 am on 24 August.

There were no injuries in any of the incidents.

On Thursday morning, detectives executed a search warrant at a property in Seymour where a man was arrested.

The 22-year-old Seymour man has been charged with recklessly causing bush fire, criminal damage by fire, stalking, possessing drug of dependence and committing indictable offence whilst on bail.

He has been remanded to appear before Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on 8 September.
