Man charged over alleged theft of TVs and electrical goods – Lake lllawarra

A man has been charged with property and weapons offences over the alleged theft of televisions and other electrical goods in the Lake Illawarra area at the weekend.

Police will allege a man entered a department store in a shopping centre on Cowper Street, Warrawong, just before midday on Saturday 1 April 2023, and stole a stick vacuum.

He then attended the same store on Monday (3 April 2023), and allegedly stole two televisions, a sound system, and a home projector.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District were notified of both incidents and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, local police – with assistance from officers attached to the Southern Region Enforcement Squad’s High Visibility Policing Unit – executed a search warrant at a unit on Tobruk Avenue, Port Kembla, about 2.40pm the same day (Monday 3 April 2023).

During the search, officers seized items believed to be stolen including a television, sound system and projector.

A 24-year-old man was arrested at the home and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with;

  • Larceny (two counts),
  • Goods suspected stolen in/on premises (not motor vehicle),
  • Possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit,
  • Enter inclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse (two counts),
  • Possess prohibited drug, and,
  • Detention application – arrest.

He appeared in Wollongong Local Court yesterday (Tuesday 4 April 2023), where he was formally refused bail to reappear in the same court tomorrow (Thursday 6 April 2023).
