Man charged over string of deliberately lit fires – Wollongong

Police have charged a man after a string of deliberately lit fires on the state’s south coast.

Detectives from Wollongong Police District commenced an investigation into a number of suspicious fires targeting vehicles and bins in the Wollongong area, between Thursday 12 October 2023 and Saturday 14 October 2023.

Fortunately, no people were injured.

The damages caused by the fires is believed to be around $50,000.

Following inquiries, a 21-year-old man was arrested on Wilson Street, Wollongong, before he was taken to Wollongong Police Station.

A search warrant was executed at the man’s home on Wilson Street, where police located burnt clothing.

The man has been charged with 18 counts of damage property by fire/explosion and destroy or damage property.

He was refused bail to appear before Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 18 October 2023).
