Mitchell Shire Council has welcomed a $250,000 Victorian Government grant to help deliver a new district-level play and social gathering space in Wallan East.
Lauren Kathage MP, State Member for Yan Yean, announced the funding at an event on Wednesday evening, with the grant provided through the 2026-27 Community Sport and Recreation Projects (CSF).
The project will help provide new recreational infrastructure for families with young children in Wallan East, one of Mitchell Shire’s growing communities.
The proposed play space will include play equipment, bench seating, paving, pathways and landscaping, creating a welcoming place for families to spend time outdoors, connect with others and enjoy their local community.
The specific play equipment and location of the new play space are yet to be determined, with Council’s Newbridge Recreation Reserve Master Plan currently open for community consultation.
Community feedback will help inform the planning for future recreational facilities in the area, ensuring the needs of local residents are considered as Wallan East continues to grow.
Mitchell Shire Mayor, Councillor John Dougall said the funding was an important step towards providing more recreational opportunities for the growing community.
“Wallan East is growing rapidly, and it’s important that our open spaces and recreational facilities keep pace with that growth.
“This funding will help us work towards delivering a new play space where families with young children can play, meet other local families and spend time together outdoors.
“These spaces are about more than just play equipment. They help bring people together, build connections between neighbours and create a stronger sense of community.
“I’d like to thank Lauren Kathage MP and the Victorian Government for supporting this project and helping us plan for the needs of our growing community.”
Council is currently seeking community feedback on the Newbridge Recreation Reserve Master Plan, which will help guide the future planning of recreational facilities in the area.
