Man charged re stabbing at department store in Melbourne

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following an alleged stabbing in Melbourne’s CBD earlier this week.

It is alleged a male staff member confronted a man and a woman who stole a designer handbag from a Little Bourke Street department store shortly before 12pm on 16 May.

The male then allegedly stabbed the staff member in the arm before fleeing with his accomplice.

The staff member was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Detectives executed two search warrants this morning in Maidstone and Ascot Vale where they arrested two men and seized a firearm and a quantity of drugs including heroin and amphetamine.

A 19-year-old Maidstone man has been charged in relation to the alleged stabbing. He has been charged with intentionally cause injury, multiple counts of theft, firearm offences, drug possession and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

He is expected to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this evening.

An 18-year-old man from Ascot Vale was also arrested as a result of the search warrants, for matters unrelated to the alleged stabbing. He is currently assisting police with enquiries.

Police are continuing to make enquiries into the identity and whereabouts of the alleged female accomplice to the stabbing incident.
