Man charged with firearms offences following armed carjacking in Nowra

Detectives have charged a man following an armed carjacking on the state’s South Coast this morning.

Just after 2am (Thursday 10 January 2019), a 32-year-old man was driving a Kia Rio on Holloway Road, East Nowra, when he saw a man waving his arms and stopped.

Police will allege the man entered the Rio and threatened the driver with a loaded firearm, before forcing him out of the car and stealing the vehicle.

The Kia was last seen travelling south on Holloway Road and into Hillcrest Avenue, South Nowra.

The driver was uninjured.

Officers from South Coast Police District were notified and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, police attended a home in Filter Road, West Nowra, about 3pm.

A perimeter was established after a 21-year-old man was allegedly seen exiting the home.

He was arrested on Yalwal Road about 3.30pm and taken to Nowra Police Station.

Officers searched the West Nowra home and allegedly located and seized a shortened .22 firearm, ammunition, and a white powder.

The Nowra man was charged with six offences including robbery while armed with dangerous weapon, possess shortened firearm without authority, possess ammunition without holding licence/permit, acquire firearm no licence or permit-prohibited firearm, not keep firearm safely, and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear at Nowra Local Court tomorrow (Friday 11 January 2019).
