A man will appear in court today charged after being extradited from Western Australia after allegedly defrauding a vulnerable man of more than $400,000.
In June 2020, detectives from Cumberland Police Area Command commenced an investigation following reports a then aged 58-year-old man was defrauded of a large sum of money.
The man, who lives with an intellectual disability, was befriended by a work colleague who is alleged to have escorted him to a financial institution on a number of occasions between November 2014 and January 2016 and coerced him into withdrawing money from his account.
The man became aware that more than $435,000 had been withdrawn from his account in early 2020 and reported the matter to police.
Following extensive investigations, detectives applied for and were granted an arrest warrant for a 52-year-old man, residing in Western Australia, in April 2022.
With the assistance of Western Australia Police, the man was arrested at a home in Gilwell Avenue, Kelmscott, on Monday (9 May 2022), pursuant to the interstate warrant.
The man appeared in the Armidale Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (10 May 2022), where detectives applied for his extradition, which was subsequently granted.
He was escorted back to New South Wales yesterday (Wednesday 11 May 2022) and taken to Mascot Police Station, where he was charged with an outstanding warrant for the offences of knowingly deal with proceeds of crime, and dishonestly obtain financial advantage etc by deception.
The man was refused bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court today (Thursday 12 May 2022).
