A man will appear in court today charged after allegedly spitting on a police officer and four paramedics in Sydney’s east last night.
About 6.35pm (Tuesday 14 July 2020), NSW Ambulance attended a unit at Uralla Place, South Coogee, following concerns for a man’s welfare.
Two paramedics treated an intoxicated 56-year-old for lacerations to his head before attempting to take him to hospital for further treatment.
During this time, the man allegedly spat at a male paramedic, hitting him in the face.
As the paramedics were leaving the home due to safety concerns, the man allegedly followed them, yelling at them before spitting on the neck of the same paramedic and the back of the second male paramedic. He also allegedly threatened to physically harm them.
A short time later, officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command and two further paramedics attended the home and spoke with the man.
While being assisted onto a stretcher, the man allegedly spat at the male paramedics; hitting them in the shoulder and face.
He also spat at the officer, a male inspector, hitting his torso.
The man was restrained before being transferred under police guard to Prince of Wales Hospital.
After being discharged from hospital, the man was taken to Maroubra Police Station and charged with assault officer in execution of duty, not comply with noticed direction regarding spitting/cough, four counts of obstruct or hinder ambulance officer by act of violence, and stalk/intimidate with intent to cause fear of physical or mental harm.
He was refused bail and is due to appear before Waverley Local Court today (Wednesday 15 July 2020).
