A Hong Kong national has had his visa cancelled and is awaiting removal from Australia after child exploitation material was found on his mobile phone at Melbourne Airport.
The 50-year-old man arrived on a flight from Bangkok on 14 November 2018 and was subject to an examination by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers.
During the examination, two electronic devices were inspected and found to contain child exploitation material.
The man’s visa was subsequently cancelled and he was detained under s189 of the Migration Act 1958, pending removal from Australia.
ABF Regional Commander Victoria, Craig Palmer, said visitors need to be aware how seriously this type of abhorrent material is viewed under Australian law.
“Targeting child exploitation material is an operational priority for the ABF. We are committed to doing all we can to put a stop to this trade, and protect children both in Australia and overseas,” Commander Palmer said.
“ABF officers are highly trained and are always on the lookout for this type of material. If we find it – those involved should know they could face up to 10 years in jail and/or a fine of up to $525,000.”
