A man will face court today charged after a car was stolen during a home invasion and was then involved in a pursuit with police in Sydney’s south-west.
Just after 7am yesterday (Saturday 15 May 2021), police were called to a home on Marion Street, Bankstown after reports of a home invasion.
Officers from Bankstown Police Area Command responded along with Traffic and Highway Patrol.
Police were told that a man, armed with a knife, entered the home and allegedly forced entry to two rooms where he threatened the occupants, demanding cash and keys to a car.
The armed man stole a Mazda sedan and drove off.
Traffic and Highway Patrol sighted the Mazda on Edgar Street, Condell Park, and initiated a pursuit after the vehicle failed to stop, travelling through Condell Park, Bankstown, and Georges Hall.
The Mazda drove into parkland off Birdwood road and the driver fled. The 39-year-old man was arrested after a short foot pursuit.
He was taken to Bankstown Hospital, under police guard for mandatory testing before being transferred to Bankstown Police Station.
He was charged with aggravated robbery and use corporal violence, enter vehicle or boat without consent of owner/occupier, aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence – armed, demand property with menaces with intent to steal, robbery armed with offensive weapon, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester, learner exceed speed > 45km/h, and possess prohibited drug.
The Merrylands man was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Sunday 16 May 2021).
